SOUTHERN PINES, NC – The Moore County Chamber of Commerce announced today the winner of the inaugural Janet A. Powell Community Service Award, honoring an outstanding Moore County Chamber of Commerce member. This award honors the accomplishments of an individual or organization that demonstrated a tremendous positive impact on the community with a goal of Advancing Commerce or Community within the last year. This year’s award recipient is the Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care, Inc.
“The Chamber is proud to present this award to the Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care,” stated Holly Bell, 2010 Chairman of the Board. According to Bell, “The Coalition truly demonstrated excellence, creativity and initiative in all they did throughout 2009 – an unbelievably challenging year.”
The Honorable Howard Coble, United States House of Representatives, will present the recognition to the Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care at the Moore County Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet on January 28, 2010 at the Carolina Hotel.
For consideration of the award nominees needed to demonstrate success in one or more of the following areas:
Community volunteer - working without compensation for a business, government, or not-for profit organization to better the Moore County community;
Service to a not-for-profit organization - going above and beyond the call of duty in assisting a not-for-profit complete a project or meet its mission and doing so without compensation; and
Meet a specific need/challenge in the community - demonstrated accomplishment in the face of unforeseen challenges, changes, or adversity.
According to the Coalitions application, in 2009 contributions to the organization decreased 20%. At the same time they increased financial aid over 26%. It is estimated that they served approximately 10% of the total households in Moore County.
“The Coalition showed great creativity in addressing these challenges to meet the needs in the county,” Bell said. “Jan Powell, for whom this award is named, would be very proud to know the first recipient of this award went to an organization that she had a true passion for.”
Powell was a long time volunteer and supported of the Moore County Chamber of Commerce and several local non-profits. She died unexpectedly this summer. Powell was instrumental in securing NC Secretary of Commerce, Keith Crisco, and U.S. Senator Richard Burr to speak as a part of the Chamber’s State of series. She also chaired the 2009 membership campaign which surpassed its goal by 30%.
“Jan is missed every day around the Chamber,” Patrick Coughlin, President and CEO, said. “The creation of this award is a permanent reminder of her passion for Moore County and will serve as a lasting tribute to our friend, who impacted so many lives.”
