SOUTHERN PINES, NC – Moore County Leadership Institute (MCLI), held its February meeting with a focus on economic development and entrepreneurs in Moore County. Recognizing the vital role business plays in our community, participants were able to learn first hand how the community recruits and retains businesses and how this contributes to growth and success for Moore County residents

This session started out with an overview of economic development in Moore County and how the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Partners in Progress and Chamber of Commerce work together. This panel discussion was provided by Melanie Thompson, Moore County Partners in Progress, Caleb Miles, President of the CVB and Patrick Coughlin, President and CEO of the Chamber. Following this presentation the class participated in tours at The Pilot, Moe’s Southwest Grill, The Southern Landscape Group, and GolfNet.

"We have chosen Your Leadership Legacy: The Difference You Make in People's Lives for the MCLI participants to read this year. The book speaks about what we will leave for others to continue,” said Chris Koltyk, Co-Chair of the 2010 MCLI Class. “David Woronoff at The Pilot spoke of his family's legacy in the newspaper business and the legacy he has continued to uphold from The Pilot's previous owner. Eric Stromberg is keeping his dad's legacy alive at Golfnet and Brad Bullock is just beginning a legacy of community service at Moe's Southwest Grill. Billy Gray and Bradley Reeves were able to show the MCLI Class how leadership is incorporated into The Southern Landscape Group’s everyday routine.”

This group also took the opportunity to focus on visits to the Northern portion of our community with visits to Fireshadow Pottery and the Town of Robbins. All of these sessions included during the February program provided a hands on perspective of various businesses in Moore County, but also allowed the class participants to see first hand how leadership is key in the development of a business from the ground up.

"We also wanted the class to experience the rural parts of our county where creative souls have woven a tapestry of entrepreneurship, like Sally Larson and Mo McKenzie, whose Fireshadow Pottery is a success story of doing what you love. And in Robbins, Randall Moore shared the story of a town that was once a thriving mill town, reinventing itself into an outdoor recreational destination and NC Step Main Street Project recipient." said Susie Buchanan, Co-Chair of the 2010 MCLI Class.

Economic development and entrepreneur day in the MCLI program helps participants understand how the business community directly impacts our community and quality of life. Participants are able to hear first hand from businesses and participate in informative tours. The importance of supporting our business community and our efforts to strengthen the economic environment for Moore County is a top priority for the Moore County Chamber.

In 1989, the Moore County Chamber of Commerce established the Moore County Leadership Institute. The goal is to develop a broader base of informed, committed, and qualified individuals capable of providing dynamic leadership for Moore County. To-date over 450 individuals have graduated from MCLI.

The objectives of MCLI are 1) Understanding Moore County, 2) Expanding Business and Personal Networks, 3) Building Leadership Skills, and 4) Finding a Place to Serve. Class participants will have the opportunity to explore various leadership topics and engage in team building exercises. In addition they will review and discuss local issues affecting education, government, agriculture, tourism, and health care. An important part of MCLI is developing class projects that address community issues raised during the year.

The mission of the Moore County Chamber of Commerce is to provide quality, value-added services and programs to members to unite Moore County area businesses in a committed effort to strengthen the economic environment and thus, improve the quality of life for all of Moore County.
