Please help Penick Village win $250,000 toward the new concept in nursing home care. Instead of the traditional nursing home model, our Garden Cottage is 10 private rooms (each with its own bath and shower) around a great room, family style dining table and kitchen. All the cooking is done on-site. Residents experience no unexplained weight loss, take fewer anti-depressants, and report a higher quality of life. We think this is how we should care for all our elders in the future. We have raised private funds and built the first Garden Cottage. 10 very excited Assisted Living residents will move in at the end of this month. We plan to work with our legislators to change laws so we can create the same model for Skilled Nursing, and then to show other communities how to replicate this model. Please vote every day from now through March 31st, and help us get this grant from Pepsi! Let your friends, family, co-workers, etc. know, too. We all want this in place before we need nursing care! We've gone from being ranked 136 to 49 in 3 days. Help us get to number one! If you'd like to see for yourself, please join us for an Open House Friday, March 19th from 4-9 pm. Or I'll be there for a smaller Open House Sunday, March 21st from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm. Just let me know if you plan to attend. Thanks for helping change the world, Julie Tampa Marketing Coordinator Penick Village jtampa@penickvillage.org 910-692-0386 http://www.refresheverything.com/penickvillage
The Village of Pinehurst has scheduled a public workshop to get comments and feedback from Pinehurst residents on the Draft 2010 Comprehensive Long-Range Village Plan. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2010 at the Pinehurst Fair Barn from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Steering Committee made up of Pinehurst residents has been working on the Plan since the fall of 2008 and the Draft Plan has been reviewed and refined by the Committee. The next step is to get feedback from Pinehurst residents. The latest version of the Plan is available on the Village website (www.villageofpinehurst.org) or at the Village Hall or at the Given Memorial Library. This meeting follows up on prior public meetings in January 2009 and November 2009 and the telephone survey in the fall of 2009. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. The Comprehensive Long-Range Village Plan being prepared is an update of the current Plan which was adopted in 2003. The Long Range Plan serves to guide the physical development of the Village so that the overall ambience is protected and the quality of life of residents is enhanced. Residents in Pinehurst are encouraged to review the Plan and bring their views, concerns, and questions to this meeting to ensure that the 2009 Plan addresses local issues and accurately reflects the community’s vision. “This Plan is an important document which will be used to guide the Village of Pinehurst over the next decade and beyond.” said Andy Wilkison, Village Manager. Questions about the public meetings may be directed to the Planning and Inspections Department at the Village of Pinehurst at 910-295-2581.
Research has shown a link between a child's academic success and his or her reading experience at home. To get students excited about reading and encourage more adults to spend time reading with children, Sylvan Learning is partnering with the National Education Association (NEA) to celebrate the 14th anniversary of NEA's Read Across America and the 106th birthday of the late Dr. Seuss on March 2, 2010. "The more children read, the more they'll enjoy reading and the better readers they're likely to become," said Debbie Benicek of the Sylvan Learning located in Aberdeen. "NEA's Read Across America is a day to celebrate the joy of reading and recognize reading's importance in school and throughout life. We love reading. And, as educational partners, the NEA and Sylvan Learning want all children to love reading as well." The National Center for Educational Statistics (January 2009) national reading assessment of fourth-grade students found that reading for fun had a positive relationship to performance on reading test scores. Generally, students who reported reading for fun on their own time once a month or more performed at the Proficient level, while students who never or hardly ever read for fun performed at the Basic level. Students who read for fun every day scored the highest. “Just as the fun words of Dr. Seuss make children want to turn the pages again and again, NEA's Read Across America revs up young readers by showing them that reading can be fun—one rhyme at a time," said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. "Part of Read Across America's phenomenal success is its diverse participation from more than 45 million readers nationwide. With Sylvan Learning's help, our commitment to building a nation of readers can be realized." From coast-to-coast, Sylvan educators will join with teachers, students, and parents to encourage a love of reading in local communities by creating reading events to literally read across North America! To find out what's happening when Seuss is on the loose, visit www.SylvanLearning.com/ReadAcrossAmerica. To encourage a love of reading, Sylvan offers a variety of tools for parents searching for ways to nurture their child’s reading behaviors - including grade-specific tips, ideas for reading at home and helpful hints for raising enthusiastic readers. For additional information, visit the “Parent Resources” section of www.SylvanLearning.com or call (910) 944-0555. To utilize BookAdventure.com, a free, Sylvan-created interactive, reading motivation program where children in grades K-8 choose books from more than 7,000 titles, take short comprehension quizzes, and redeem accumulated points for small prizes, visit www.BookAdventure.com. Village of Pinehurst invites public to opening of welcome center March 2, 2010. Pinehurst Mayor George Lane wanted a Welcome Center in the Village to show its global visitors the warmth of the community. His vision will become reality next Tuesday as the center officially opens to the public. Village Manager Andy Wilkinson will lead a 10 am ribbon cutting ceremony on March 2 at the new facility, located in the anteroom of the Women’s Exchange building on Rte. 2/Midland Road in the Village of Pinehurst. The community is invited to attend. “We lost a good friend and citizen in George,” said Wilkinson. “We are proud to open the facility in his honor, ensuring his legacy and space in our history as the mayor of the people. We hope the community will help us celebrate what he believed to be the best part of Pinehurst: friendly faces and Southern hospitality.” The center will be staffed by over 40 local volunteers who will share stories, provide maps and show places of interest to those who visit each year. It will be open from 10 am to 3 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Inside, guests will see a PBS documentary about the Village of Pinehurst that was created to celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 1995, by WGBH in Boston. The volunteers will guide visitors to the many historic structures in the Old Town section of the Village, including the Holly Inn, the Tufts Archives and Museum, quaint shops, old inns and original cottages. Former Mayor George Lane, who unexpectedly passed away just before the opening, provided the vision of the space, which uses one of Moore County’s oldest structures and breathes new life into the Women’s Exchange. The cabin, built around 1820, was moved from the Mackenzie Farm to its present location in 1922 by the Tufts Family, founders of Pinehurst. The Women’s Exchange will continue to operate in the rear of the building, allowing the Welcome Center to be staged in its anteroom. “Many people know about Pinehurst because of golf, and travel to see us for that reason,” said Lane in interviews last month. “They don’t always see the ambiance, beauty and people we have. Our goal is to provide them with insights and directions, and encourage them to come back. We want them to see that we are a welcoming community.” Mayor Lane was proud to see the center come to fruition over the past several months. He had expressed his thanks and appreciation for the support of countless individuals, including the Village Council, staff members, and volunteers who have embraced this latest addition to the historic core, led by Gwendy Hutchinson in the Planning Department. “We have so much to showcase, and so many people that want to tell its story,” he said. “We were thrilled by its location and those who will continue to see it flourish.” For more information, contact Gwendy Hutchinson at the Village Hall at 295.2581 ext. 238 or see www.villageofpinehurst.org.
