Dubbed "Piney Bottom" by its English and Scottish settlers in the early 18th century, modern-day Foxfire Village came into existence in 1967 when it was transformed into a scenic resort and residential community. Developers Rowland McKenzie and Dan Tomlinson named the community "Foxfire" in reference to a mysterious luminescence seen on plants and decaying wood.
More colorful, though, than the glow of its vegetation, is the community's history. The area is historically significant as the site of an American Revolution skirmish between the Tories and Whigs in 1780. Prior to that, its sandy ridge was a favorite hunting site for Native Americans. Situated on a hill, the Village is one of the highest elevations in Moore County and is surrounded by rich farmland known for its cotton and tobacco crops, peach orchards and vineyards.
A quaint community firmly rooted in golf, Foxfire is home to golfing great Gene Hamm's traditionally designed 36-hole course and is perhaps summed up best by the Village's tagline, "Where there are no strangers, just friends you haven't met yet."
