Now in its second century, Vass is a pastoral and scenic community that sprang up with the coming of the railroad. Though it has gone by other names, Vass was ultimately named in tribute to its heritage as one of the heaviest rail shipping sites, with an early Seaboard Rail paymaster, Major William Worrell Vass, serving as the inspiration. Vass was once a publishing hub with both The Pilot and The Sandhill Citizen originating here. Vass has a down-home feel, evident in the special events that crop up. Residents enjoy chili cook-oofs and festivals such as family-friendly Vass Beach Music Festival hosted by the Vass Fire Department. It's the kind of place that makes non-residents yearn for simpler times and has proud residents smiling knowingly at their good luck to live in a town so picturesque and gracious.
