Called “Great Falls” by the early Indians because of the 15 foot falls located on Deep River, the area is known as High Falls. The first gristmill was built on the falls by William England in 1780. In 1904 Thomas Woody began the High Falls Manufacturing Company, consisting of a spinning mill, a cotton mill, and a gristmill. Nestled in the clay hills of northern Moore County, High Falls is a quaint look back in time.
