With land grants from King George III in hand, Duncan C. Blue arrived from Scotland around 1770 to establish one of the first settlements in eastern Moore County. In 1830, he dammed a creek and created a 100-acre body of water he fittingly deemed Blue Lake. In the late 1800’s Blue developed a community around the lake called McQueen’s Hill, which today is named Lakeview. In 1902 the lake and surrounding land was sold to Percy L. Gardner and H.M. Holleman to build a resort community for people of moderate means. Blue Lake was expanded to 200 acres and renamed “Crystal Lake.” As in many areas throughout Moore County, the resort vanished during the Great Depression. The classic revival and Queen Ann style homes, however, still dot the landscape, making it a scenic hometown listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. The appeal of the community remains as it began: centered around Crystal Lake.
