In the late 1800’s, recognizing the need to transport timber and naval supplies to local commercial areas. Daniel McDonald cleared a path from this turpentine distillery located in western Moore County to Southern Pines. This path soon became an extension of the Aberdeen and Asheboro Railroad. At the most western extension of the railroad, a town quickly grew and was aptly named West End. Within a short time the population of West End grew to approximately 200 residents. In 1898 a great fire swept through the town destroying all the downtown area with the exception of the train depot and drugstore. In later years, a mill was built to manufacture furniture, known as the Stanley Furniture Company, the mill enjoyed many years of success. Upon its closure in 2002, farming once again became the major concentration for the area. Today, West End is best known for its several thousand acres of peach trees where fresh picked peaches can be purchased from mid-summer to early fall. It is one of North Carolinas top peach producing areas.
